How do I fix my peeling cool deck?

2/11/2024

When faced with the challenge of a peeling Cool Deck, addressing smaller damaged areas can often be efficiently handled by applying a liquid coating similar to a sealer over the original surface. To initiate the repair process, start by thoroughly sweeping and cleaning the affected areas. Consider renting a power washer to effectively eliminate any unwanted debris or peeling paint chips, ensuring a clean and smooth substrate for the repair.

However, for more substantial or challenging jobs where the peeling issue is extensive or widespread, seeking the expertise of a professional pool decking company becomes crucial. In such instances, companies like Pool Deck San Antonio specialize in tackling tough and larger-scale projects. Their professional team is equipped with the knowledge, experience, and resources to assess the extent of the damage and implement comprehensive solutions.

By entrusting the job to professionals, property owners can ensure a durable, long-lasting, and aesthetically pleasing resolution to the peeling Cool Deck issue, transforming it into a revitalized and resilient surface for years to come.

Why does cool deck crack?

2/10/2024

Cool Deck, like any concrete surface, is susceptible to cracking due to various factors, with thermal expansion being a primary cause. When concrete is exposed to temperature fluctuations, it undergoes expansion and contraction. If the expansion joints are not correctly spaced or if they are insufficient, the concrete may develop cracks as a result of these temperature-induced movements.

In hot weather, the concrete can absorb heat and expand. If the surface temperature is significantly different from the interior temperature or if there are inadequate measures to accommodate this expansion, cracks may form as the concrete cools down.

The key factors contributing to cool deck cracking include:
  1. Insufficient Expansion Joints: Improperly spaced or inadequate expansion joints can restrict the concrete's natural movement during temperature changes, leading to cracking.
  2. Temperature Fluctuations: Significant temperature variations, especially in hot weather, can result in thermal expansion and contraction, contributing to cracks if the concrete is not designed to accommodate these changes.
  3. Inadequate Substrate Preparation: Poor substrate preparation, including improper cleaning or surface irregularities, can impact the adhesion of the cool deck material, potentially leading to cracks.

To minimize the risk of cracking, proper installation, attention to expansion joint spacing, and consideration of temperature fluctuations during the application process are crucial. Additionally, regular maintenance and addressing any signs of cracking promptly can help prolong the life of the cool deck surface. If you need a Cool Deck contractor contact us.

Is cool deck slippery when wet?

2/9/2024

Concerns about slipperiness on cool decks when wet are mitigated through careful application and texture techniques employed by reputable contractors. A skilled contractor ensures that the cool pool deck coating is textured in a manner that minimizes slipperiness when wet. Additionally, the incorporation of aggregates directly into the sealer during the mixing process provides an extra layer of slip resistance to the surface. By leveraging these methods, a well-executed cool deck not only maintains its functionality but also addresses safety concerns, offering a secure and slip-resistant environment, even in wet conditions. It is advisable to consult with professionals who employ these techniques to ensure the optimal performance and safety of your cool deck surface. Learn more about our cool pool deck coatings.

Can you resurface Kool deck?

2/9/2024

Yes, it is possible to resurface Kool Deck. Kool Deck is a brand of textured concrete surface commonly used for pool decks, and over time, it may experience wear, cracks, or other issues that necessitate resurfacing.

The resurfacing process typically involves the following steps:
  1. Cleaning: The existing Kool Deck surface must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, debris, and any contaminants that could affect the adhesion of the new surface.
  2. Repairing: Any cracks, chips, or damaged areas on the existing Kool Deck should be repaired before resurfacing. This may involve patching and smoothing the surface.
  3. Priming: Applying a suitable primer helps ensure proper adhesion between the existing Kool Deck and the new resurfacing material.
  4. Application of New Surface: The new resurfacing material, whether it's another layer of Kool Deck or a different coating, is applied according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Finishing: Once the new surface is applied, it is typically finished and sealed to enhance durability and appearance.

It's important to note that the specific process may vary based on the resurfacing product or method chosen. Hiring a professional with experience in concrete resurfacing is recommended to ensure the job is done effectively and meets the specific requirements of the Kool Deck surface.

Considering what color to use on your San Antonio pool deck?

Deciding on what color of pool decking finish or color are very important decisions that will make a difference in the future lifetime and usability of the deck. Most people, while deciding what color of stain to use on their concrete pool deck or cool deck, are considering how to color match or color coordinate the look and feel that they are going for. However, one of the things that is least considered is how comfortable you may feel walking on a particular texture or looking at the surface around the pool.

Most people, buy in large, stain the concrete decking as opposed to having a continuous color added into the concrete. Colors that are typically added into concrete pool decking are then stamped or stenciled.  If you are a DIY'er you may consider consulting a professional pool decking company in San Antonio.

Therefore, it is important to consider the pool deck color, not just for aesthetic and color- coordinating reasons, but because the reflective qualities of concrete can enhance one's experience or take away from one's experience. A light color around the pool will in some ways mimic a natural setting like a beach or a water setting that you might enjoy. One unique or dramatic way of creating a unique effect is by creating this Roman-style asked look and feel. Typically it is a dark border surrounded by a lighter monochromatic color. I personally enjoy this particular look. When considering the color of stain that you want to use on your pool decking resurfacing or finishing project consider lighter colors to be ones that will last longer and give a more natural look and feel.

If you use a darker color it can give a beautiful dramatic look that you can enjoy as well. Just know that the darker colors that you use in stains will attract more heat.  If that is the effect or desired look I certainly would not try to sway one's thoughts. Hopefully this San Antonio pool deck blog, dedicated to resurfacing pools, will help answer some questions and possibly create some new ones.
